Tips on hiring a 'Professional DJ'

For those who have never hired a 'Professional DJ' before, the following are all items of concern. For those 'In the Business', it's all standard operating procedure.

1) Always make sure that the person you are speaking with on the phone is the same person that will be the DJ at your event. If it's not, ask to speak directly with the DJ that will be performing at your event. Do this before signing any Contract! It is very important that you feel comfortable with the DJ and his abilities, not just with the salesman on the other end of the phone.

2) Always make sure that the DJ is utilizing 'Anti-Skip' technology, with either a 'Professional' grade CD Player or 'Professional' DJ software if the DJ is using MP3's. Verify the 'Anti-Skip' feature, as there is nothing worse than having the music cut-out in the middle of a dance song. What if somebody was to bump into the DJ's equipment during the Bride & Groom's first dance as husband & wife?

3) Does the DJ carry back-up equipment on-site? Back-up equipment that is "Only a phone-call away!" is not the way to go if this is a 'once-in-a-lifetime' event, such as a Wedding Reception.

4) Basic 'dance-floor' lighting should always be included, free of charge. Dance-floor lighting helps to create an ambiance that seems to draw people out onto the dance floor.

5) Always make sure that your DJ will be providing professional-grade speakers?  Does the company offer sound upgrades such as 'sub-woofers' that may be required for larger parties or outdoor events?

6) Will the DJ be set-up and playing 'Cocktail Music' before the guests start arriving? Not only does this help to set the mood, but a DJ who arrives after dinner to set-up is a huge distraction to everyone at the event.

7) Will the DJ take and play requests from your guests?

8) Does the DJ have the 'technical ability' to deal with any situations that may arise at your event? E.g. connecting a video-projector's audio-outputs to the DJ's sound system for a video or slide presentation.

9) Is the DJ easy to contact? Can you reach him / her directly with any questions or concerns that you may have about your upcoming event?

10) To confirm a booking, a 'Professional DJ' will require both a Retainer and a signed Agreement. Be wary of those who do not.

Most of all, a 'Professional DJ' should put your mind at ease and make you feel that you have chosen someone who cares as much about your event, as you do.

Sincerely,

Steve Milani
